Contextualism: A New Theory

Comtext is the most important thing t consider when interpreting a text. historical background provides a lot of insight into whawt the author meant when writing a text. Whether it be a war or a political scandal, all things happening in the world affect what writers write. Without knowing about World War II, how would one understnad and interpret The Diary of Anne Frank? It is not impossible to appreciate a text without knowing the context from which it emerges, but it is impossible to fully understand it. No writer writes without outside influences and the current events surrounding the author do find their way into the pieces. Carl Marx could have never written The Communist Manifesto without having been influenced by other political systems that existed before and during his time. Non-fiction is not the only genre affected by historical context. FIction novels all include bits and pieces of history from the real world.

My theory is difficult to appy to this text. Since I have never seen this movie and know nothing about the screenwriter, I have no idea what the historical context is. However, since the film is in color, I can assume that it was filmed after 1950 and the dawn of technicolor. The film was filmed before 1979 because the sound and videa quality were still fairly primitive. We can assume that this was filmed at a time during the women's suffrage movement and the beginning of women's rights. Interestingly, the female doll shows a very feministic move by not allowing the man to kiss her hand at the end. She does not do what the men want her to do and this shows the context of the women's rights movement in the film. Influences can be found in any context, as shown by the previous explanation.
